IT145 - Long Time No See
IT 145 Wow long time no see. First class in 2 weeks and will end up being the only one for another 2 weeks since we have assessment day on the 2nd. I will do my best to have video tutorials on everything I went over but right now I'm fighting not having a voice. It holds out for only about 2 hours a day now. I am getting better but my throat is suffering a bit. Tonight I tired to jam pack in several items. I started the class by demonstrating the power of Adobe Bridge. You may not find it useful if you only deal with a few photos, however the more you gather the better it becomes especially since it will bulk modify pics very quickly. We also had a little tutorial on what FTP is. You should download Filezilla from the downloads section and use it up upload your photoshop pics to the web server. Remember the code to get your pictures to show up on my website is

<img src="http://www.scorchedsilicon.com/users/username/yourpic.jpg">

If you added a directory to your ftp your code will look something like:
<img src="http://www.scorchedsilicon.com/users/username/dirname/pic.jpg">

We then took the time to sign up for an account on my website. Remember your user name on the site does not equal your user name for the ftp service. I had to set up the ftp ahead of time and used your first and last names as the user name (no spaces) and your S number for the password. Whatever account you created will only allow you to post the pics to the photoshop contests.

The tools that I used this evening were: the type tools, the horizontal and vertical type mask tools, free transform with warp, clone stamp, spot healing, healing brush, patch tool, and I also showed off using layers and the blending options so you can create drop shadows and such.

The homework is as follows: (1) Text Mask Logo as demonstrated in class (make it a little spiffier then I did) (1) Fix-a-Pic - I don't care what picture you fix but use the tools shown and include the original so I can compare how you did. (1) Free transform a photo and superimpose it onto a jumbotron/tv/anything you want (1) Remove graffiti from a wall (pics included if you can't find any) (3) Photoshop contests listed.

IT275 2/23
Globaloria This week we will be focusing on the Scrolling Background activity. I have updated the schedule and created a deliverables page for you in the grade book. Our blogging will be based on the activities so figure roughly 1-2 times per week depending on how much material we go over. I also wanted you to straighten up your projects page and relabel everything accordingly which I see that you did a good job with. Add to your projects page the layout that I gave you so we can easily categorize all of the projects. See you Thursday.

Photoshop - What is scaring this guy?
PS Contest Whatever it is he is scared as hell and holding a pineapple? Photoshop whatever is scaring this guy.

Photoshop Contest - Frenchies
PS Contest Photoshop these ....whatever they are.

IT192 - Hot Rod Math
IT 192 Well by now you should have had your simple math calculator done and dropped on the z: drive. Today was an exercise in bettering your math skills and working with order of operations in the code. You will need to create a simple form with text boxes to enter all of the data to do a little hot rod math. The minimum formulas you will use are:

Calculate HP From ET and Weight
HP = (Weight / ((ET/5.825)^3))

Calculate HP From MPH and Weight
HP = (((MPH / 234)^3) * Weight)

Formulas for MPH RPM gears & tires
mph = (rpm x tire diameter) / (gear ratio x 336)
rpm = (mph x gear ratio x 336) / tire daimeter
gear ratio = (rpm x tire diameter) / (mph x 336)
tire diameter = (mph x gear ratio x 336) / rpm

If you want to put any more formulas into your calculator by all means please do so. I will give extra credit if you are successful in getting them to work. If you didn't get a copy of the formulas pdf I have place it in the downloads section. Not due Thursday, BUT you better come to class having tried it and not starting out from scratch.

IT180 2/23
IT 180 Lecture on power supplies and electricity. Finished up with chapter 3 then we watched a few videos to get us prepped for chapter 4 on processors. Here are the links to the videos if you want to re-watch them.

How a processor is made - nice pictoral.

The How It's Made episode showing CPU's

A video from AMD about processor manufacturing.

I appreciate the help on tiding up the lab today. That will go a long way towards us getting to work tearing down pc's on Thursday. I'll let you know which chapters we will be having a test on. Remember no class on Tuesday but there will be an exam next Thursday.

GradeBook is Now Online
General News I now have the online grade book up and running. It may not be pretty but it is better than anything anyone else has + your grades show up in real time. Remember to click the grade book link from the main menu of my site and then follow the directions in the attached word document.

I have worked insanely hard on this to get it just right. I’m hoping this works without too much of a headache. This will only work with internet explorer. Opera freaks out and wants to download a file which is not what should happen, and Google Chrome does appear to work but throws a bunch of errors at you constantly. I haven’t tested with FireFox but I’m sure it will probably crash as well. Attached I have put together a simple document with screen shots showing you how to get into the site. User name is first name and last name (ex. MatthewPayne note caps). Password is your student ID starting with a capital S. Now for some ground rules.

1) You are on the honor code. If for some reason I have made a mistake in the programming and another student’s grades are shown you are to tell me immediately. I will correct the problem asap. I have taken steps to try and ensure confidentiality but mistakes do happen.

2) This is the best system on the market for handling such a large spreadsheet without having to rely on another provider. It is quirky and I’ve not tuned on it yet. Suck it up and live with what you get, beggars can’t be choosers.

3) I grade things when I grade them. I will not tolerate pestering to update the grades. What is displayed is an exact copy of what I’m working on. You have some math skills, add up your own points and figure out what you need on the next assignment or test to get the grade you want. The possible points are displayed at the bottom of every sheet. NOTE: If your grade says F…do the math. Look at the cell in the spreadsheet and get the calculation. Unless you are lazy and did no work it is probably because something is missing. IE…WE HAVE HAD NO EXAM…THERE ARE NO EXAM GRADES YET…SO THERE IS NO INFO FOR THE SPREADSHEET TO CALCULATE WITH!!!

4) This system is for your benefit. Use it to see what you are missing or what you didn’t turn in. Hopefully the lazy ones will see this and figure out just how badly they are doing.

5) This in no way changes my late turn in policy. If you have a ton of missing work, then that is your problem not mine. If I become inundated with emails about turning old work in because you just realized how lazy you really were I will take the gradebook offline. I have enough irons in the fire as it is I don’t need any more work or pestering.

6) If you do see something missing that you know you turned in and there isn’t a grade, you need to email me or mention it to me in class. Also you better have proof that I graded whatever it was, so it is to your benefit to always keep a copy of your emails and returned homework, without it there isn’t much I can do about changing the grade. This will also keep me on my toes when grading.

7) The assignments are generally easy to figure out by their titles. Please don’t slam me with emails about what each means. I know what they mean and that is really what counts in the end.
8) If you email me about any issue regarding the site please be patient with me as a response may take a little bit. The online gradebook is lowest on the list of priorities right now.

Well that about wraps it up. If you would please give me some feedback about it and let me know if you feel it is worth my efforts. Thanks
