Ok after a bit of screwing around trying to get the iso downloaded off the server, we managed to get Visual Studio installed and working. I did a quick intro to the programming interface and showed the Hello World project. Get your books asap so we can really get into some cool stuff.
Wow only 3 guys showed up for class today! Well we had to soldier on so after finishing the pre-test we got to setup our new 55" Vizio flat panel tv. The 3 who showed up got 10 points for a lab grade listed as technical setup. Routing wires and unboxing/setting up new equipment is a considerable task that we as techs run into all the time. I was pleased that the cable to the computer was long enough. Afterwards I got the guys logged in to Blackboard. Remember next Thursday question sets for chapter 1 are due to get on time points. You also owed me daily articles starting today. Get on those boys!
Big class! Lot's O' new people. Room will be tight so if you want to use your own laptop and move to the center of the room that is fine with me. There are no books for this class but I have 2 suggested readings:
Adobe Photoshop CS4 Classroom in a Book
978-0-321-57379-7
Also if you have a favorite mouse or a nice mouse pad, you may want to bring that. The CS4 trial edition is in the downloads section. It is only good for a month so after that you will either need to purchase it or start coming to my lab during office hours or open times. Get ready to enjoy a nice class.
Only having 2 returning students makes this semester a bit odd. Looks like this class will be run independent study. We will not be meeting in the classroom for a while, however I will be in contact with you via Skype. For now be working on the step that we left off on - Intro to Action Script. I'm setting a goal of 1 blog post a week, and to follow up and make sure that all the wiki work is done properly. More later.
Small class of returning faces. :) There were problems on getting the book that I wanted for class. I found a replacement and the bookstore quickly got some of the books ordered. We have upgraded from working in VB6 to working with VB .Net 2008. 2010 is available but it is in beta and I don't want to program using beta software.
The ISBN-13 for the new book is 978-0-07-351720-9 or alternately the ISBN-10 is 0-07-351720-8.
Get the book as quickly as you can. I'm not even going to mention the pre-test. :p
Yay the first class of the semester! Only 4 of 8 guys showed up. :( Glad to see we have several new faces. We met everyone and went over the website and the syllabus. Talked a little about the book and then broke for the day. Will have the pre-test on Thursday.
One of the things that I have done about student motivation is to pit the students against the other colleges. We went spent time visiting Marshall and Shepard's blogs and wiki's a few times throughout the semester. The students saw how far along the other students were and in turn they motivated themselves to "out do" the other schools. The natural competitiveness showed and they really tried hard to further their flash games just to try and trump the other students.
Just wanted to post a little welcome back to school message. This is gearing up to be a pretty cool semester. I've got 20 hours of class and we're going to do some very interesting stuff, especially with class delivery methods. I will have all the pc's in the lab switched over to Win7 in the next week. Rick and I decided to go ahead and make the plunge based on the performance from last semester. If you have any online course with me please drop me a line so I have your updated email address. I will be sending out info for classes the first of the week. Take care and see you in class.
WV STUDENTS: POST-COURSE SURVEY
Students who are only in Globaloria for the Fall term should take this survey in December. (Full year students should take it in May): http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/MSCJD8C
I've already updated IT275 this morning and posted it. I will be working on updating everything throughout the rest of the day. Keep checking in to see if your grade has changed or if there is anything you are missing.
Just a day to work in the lab on your projects. We have this week, next week and that is pretty much it. I will say for now that final presentations will be on the last day of class just in case we run out of time and need the final exam day to finish up.
Lecture day. Skipping chapter 9-10 because we have no use for them at the moment + Netware support is really dropping by the wayside and I would rather concentrate on other things. We have already gone over several of the commands from chapter 11 but we went back over the material just for practice. Chapter 12 was easy since we have had that material throughout the entire semester.
Not a bunch to do today other than lecture. Finished any work on chapter 9 that was missed and went over chapter 10. There will be an exam on 7-9 next class.
