Very cool evening! I had fun in class tonight. We had our very first Skype meeting. Some things didn't go over as planned but I feel the experiment was a huge success. We found out that a giant chat works really well but that Skype only supports desktop sharing on a one to one basis. A quick search revealed that we can all install the Skype add-on Yugma. That saved the day! Yugma allows up to 20 people to share a desktop for free. If you didn't join our conversation then you will need to download the Yugma.com client for free and install it.
I then tried to show everyone how to remote into a client. In this case our client machine was a VMware XP box. However due to time constraints I didn't get the network connection setup correctly on the VM. I did manage to fix it later that evening so I can now have a VM to demo things on to you all. We will try this setup again next week and see how well it works. After that I may go back to a classroom setting. Be working on your online labs.

IT183 9/17 - Chapter 4 |
We had a nice discussion on chapter 4. Little bit of a dry lecture day but we got through it and I think you guys are starting to get the concepts down better. Remember next class we are going to skip ahead to the wireless chapter. Also on Tues we will meet and then hold class at a local restaraunt. We will plan our war drive out over food. Be working on chapter 4 online questions.

Nvidia GT300 Yeilds 2% |

This goes great with what we were talking about in IT180 yesterday. We discussed how chips are made on wafers and that each is tested before they chop the entire thing up into the individual cores. Not to mention how tiny each of the circuit traces are that make up the chips. Well it is being reported over at Semiaccurate.com that the new GT300 cores are only seeing a 1.7% success rate.
"The first hot lot of GT300s have 104 die candidates per wafer, with four wafers in the pod Nvidia got back a week and a half ago. There is another pod of four due back any day now, and that's it for the hot lots.
How many worked out of the (4 x 104) 416 candidates? Try 7. Yes, Northwood was hopelessly optimistic - Nvidia got only 7 chips back. Let me repeat that, out of 416 tries, it got 7 'good' chips back from the fab. Oh how it must yearn for the low estimate of 20%, talk about botched execution. To save you from having to find a calculator, that is (7 / 416 = .01682), rounded up, 1.7% yield."

Everyone needs to download Skype for tomorrow evening. I want to have an experimental class to see if this is a technology we could use for future classes. I know it works well for 3-4 people but 12-14. If you have any problems make sure to see me or tell me ahead of time.

I'm going to rearrange the way the wiki has things laid out. I want to focus on using Flash. To me that way it is laid out it is like asking you to build a car without knowing how to turn a wrench. I am doing this so everyone has a better understanding of the Flash interface before we realy get into the gaming aspect of the class.
Tonight's topics included the Pen Tool, Pencil Tool, Brush Tool, Eraser, Line Tool, Showing Rulers, all the tool modifiers (even the Faucet modifier), the Ink Bottle tool, and lastly the cookie cutter effect.
We had a group discussion about gaming ideas. I also heard that the reason the blogs are thin on content is that people have never been asked to share their thoughts before. This is one of the reasons behind this class, to get you to open up and share ideas. I could tell that even after just 10 min that everyone in the group had a little better idea for their game. I also have removed any contraints off the game topics so go wild.
To round out the night we practiced on using the tools. Many people hand drew a picture, took a photo, and then traced it in flash. Others took images off the web and traced outlines modding the design some. All looked very good by the end of the evening. If you get a chance, check out John Browning's image on his blog. I can see a true artist among us. In just a few minutes time and without hardly any prior knowledge of Flash he created a wonderful piece of art.
Your homeowrk is to work on the "Choosing a Topic" portion of the wiki. I want the answers and your work posted to your blogs. You are also to blog about what you have learned and any problems that you may have encountered and how you have or have not over come them.

IT183 9/15 - Hook a brotha up! |
Took the first exam on chapters 1-3. Avg was a 77.6%, gonna have to step up and study some more guys. Afterwards we chatted about DHCP and PING and IPCONFIG. As an in class assignment we did chapter 4 projects 4-1 thru 4-4 (skip 4-3 if you have the 5th ed book).
As a homework assignment for next class I want you to do case project 3-1. You will need to assume a few things to justify your answers and figure out how the buildings and different depts should be wired (or wireless'd (<- is that a word?) together). Be creative and make sure you give me an explaination as to the methods of connectivity that you use.

IT180 9/15 - It's all about the Pentiums Baby! |
Started off today by taking the chapter 1-3 exam. I did adjust a question on it about battery disposal, so everyone got credit for it. With that adjustment there were several 100% in the class, nice guys, nice. We then proceeded to talk about processors. After watching several Youtube videos, I hope everyone has a greater understanding of how a processor comes to life. We will continue with chapter 4 on Thursday and maybe even watch a few more videos.

IT183 9/10 Office 2010 Failure |
Well this was a short class. We reviewed for the exam and then tried to install Office 2010 Technical Preview. It failed miserably. We kept getting an error where the installer couldn't find the MondoWW2.cab file. I've got another setup waiting to download so we will try again another day.

IT180 9/10 - I Have The Power!! |

Spent today talking and lecturing over chapter 3. I tried to cover the ups (<- pun) and brownouts of power supplies and the basics of power. We will be having an exam next class. I should have the exam guide posted to the downloads section shortly. Online question sets through chapter 3 are due by next class as well. Remember to read over the chapters and answer all of your questions. You will do fine on the exam. In the meantime I will work on my poor attempt at classroom humor.

IT275 9/8 - Take me to the next page |

Tonight we spent mostly on learning how to add navigation buttons to our flash files. I demo'd how to create a button and add the appropriate ActionScript code to create forward and backward buttons. In class we added the navigation to the stories we created last week or you can create something new, it was up to you.
For homework you are to add 2 blog entries as well as spend some time going over the "Choosing a Topic" section off the wiki. I want all this info gathered up and be ready to discuss your game ideas next class. This will give you blogging and wiki material.

IT183 9/8 - Makin Cables |
Ok the Mac did manage a minor upgrade from 10.3.4 to 10.4.11 big whoop, we still can't do much with it. I however have a plan in the works when I get home to upgrade the burner and burn a copy of 10.5.6 which should allow us to do what we want with it. Anyway while the file copy process was going on there was a little lesson in terminating cat5 cables. Going to have to practice fellas since many times you get paid by the job and not by the hour. 25 minutes to terminate 2 cable ends is way too much. We will finish any chapter info next class and get ready for our exam.
