IT145 4/20 - Earth Day
IT 145 I would have some cool story to write up and tell but right now my brain is totally dead. We went over a revised topic calendar and I pulled a few things that we don't have the means to do in class. I also added in a few items that I thought we should cover and somehow I had listed an extra day of class that didn't exist. (Go figure!)

After getting tongue tied for a few minutes and having failed to recover I figured I would start lecture with something simple and work my way into the harder stuff. Topics covered:

Replace Color Using Replace Color Adjustment
Using the Vanishing Point Filter to aid surface replacement in perspective
3D Tools and layering an image onto the surface of an object
Photomerge
Introducing the Quick Mask Tool via a Tilt Shift Lens tutorial

Quote of the Day
Fun Stuff Yesterday I heard the cutest thing from my neighbor's 5 year old kid Drew. (On hide and go seek.) If you told somebody where your hidin spot was, wouldn't that be called a tellin spot?

IT215 4/15 - My Skype Died
IT 215

Yeah tonight's class went over like a lead ballon. A Skype update has apparently killed my mic. I got it to work in every other program on my pc, yet Skype doesn't see a thing. You guys can make fun all you want, but just like any good IT person should, I had a backup. The mic on my MS webcam was kickin and although it wasn't the pristine sound quality that is my podcasting mic it worked in a pinch and that is all that counts. (Take note of that folks, especially if you ever have to give a presentation. Always have a backup plan!) Since it was so nice outside I cut class a bit short after having talked about the news and checking out some networking games from Cisco. See you all next week.

IT275 4/20 - Platforms and Game Upgrades
Globaloria Short post today. I'm in a rush to get a few things done. Platforms were the order of the day as well as working more on the final games. Jeremy added a gameover screen to his and Allison has replaced her blocky cars with actual artwork of cars and tractor trailers along with better sound effects. Stop by their blogs and check out the progress.

IT192 4/20
IT 192

You all are doing a good job on your programs so far from what I'm seeing. Remember you can have all the games you want but there has to be at least one of your own design and complete code. If you do have other programs included you are to document the code accordingly. I do not want anyone claiming code that is not theirs. I'll try and have a complete write up of what needs to be included for the final project on Thursday.

IT180 4/20 Laptops
IT 180 Yeah today's exciting lecture was brought to you by the letter L. L is for laptop. All of chapter 11 focused on laptops and working on them. Just as with desktops the care and maintenance is approximately the same. There are a few extras to be concerned about but nothing common sense won't take care of. You do need to be aware of how to track down and use a service manual for them as laptops can be a bear to take apart and put back together correctly. We will spend time in the lab junking some printers and performing a general clean up for next week's tune up day.

PS Contest Post all of your Earth Day pics here please. That way we can all see each others work.

Jobs: Part Time to Full IT Position Fayetteville WV
Job Postings Hamilton Burgess Law Firm is seeking a part to full time IT person in Fayetteville WV. Details below.

Our computer system is a server with about 20 workstations, plus a couple of laptops, and one home worker who accesses our system remotely. WinXP on the workstations and Windows 2003 server. Principal software is Time Matters and PCLaw ( legal specific case management and time/billing programs) Quickbooks for financial management, WordPerfect for word processing, and Outlook Express for email. We'll be replacing the server this year, and that will require considerable time. Otherwise the work consists of keeping everything running, and upgrading the hardware and software occasionally. Our current IT person is local and available to assist with questions regarding the system.

Although the IT work isn't full time, we might consider hiring someone full time with the understanding that part of the work would be legal rather than IT (for example, various aspects of litigation support.)

Compensation is negotiable, commensurate with experience, but I expect would be in the range of $12 to $15 per hour to start. We also have benefits for full time employees, including paid vacation, health care, and 401k.

If you have any students who might be interested, please ask them to contact me at 304 574 2727, or kburgess@hamiltonburgess.com

Thank you for your time.

One Leg Needs Help
Tech Hell I haven't done Tech Hell in a while. I've got a couple of stories that I've been wanting to post as well as a follow up to the dog story I ran a while back. (Yeah I got to deal with that chick with the dogs again...sheesh.) Anyhoo since I'm in a bit of a sour mood bring on the scarcasm!

I've had this audio for a while, I've just been really lazy in posting it. Basically it boils down to a woman needs help is looking for free work to be done on her computer. That is all well and good and I'm a pretty good guy at helping out when and where I can, but this is a bit over the top. She only has one leg, has trouble with transportation, can only meet on a wednesday, and even then only in the morning. WTF?! Seriously! How on god's green Earth do these people find me? I deal with this kind of thing almost every day! This woman only has one leg, hell I've got a guy in my classes that has no frickin arms and he kicks more ass than Chuck Norris! Man I hate dumb people. :(

IT275 4/13 - 3 Amigos
Globaloria Wow you guys came in super early today! I figured it was about time we updated the wiki photo since nobody but you two are still in the program. It turned out really well. Jeremy is over there looking kind of evil or something. For those reading this blog (if it ever gets read) YES THAT IS THE REAL COLOR OF ALLISON'S HAIR! I just used the extract filter to pull it out so it would show up.

Talk about being on top of stuff! You guys already busted out the timer tutorial and posted it. That was awesome. That will give us more time to work on the final games. As discussed, update the learnin' logs and your blogs. Also work on adding in the other levels of your game since it will be mostly a copy and paste operation. The games are looking really good and I'm not seeing a lot out of the other college camps right now that compares. Time will tell how well we really did.

IT192 4/13 - Project Work Day
IT 192 This was just a day to work on your ongoing final projects. In addition to the previous requirements I have added in an additional program. You are to have at least 1 game of your own design to throw in the mix. Most folks in the past have done spelling games, match/memory games, or a variety of others. Look around and see what you can find.

IT180 4/13 - Mini Field Trip
IT 180 After having a hunk of cake we took a little mini field trip over to the old building and checked out the wiring closet behind the elevator. Lots of cool stuff in there. What was much cooler was going into the server room and checking out the equipment there. Lots O' expensive toys in that room!

We came back and worked our way through the majority of chapter 9 and then headed over to the lab to install some wireless networking cards and usb nics. We will finish that lab out when Thursday rolls around.
